Canterbury wind is tougher on fences than most people realise. One good nor'wester can lean a whole run, and a wet winter finds every soft post. Before you assume the fence needs replacing, it is worth asking whether a repair will do — most storm damage, leaning posts and broken palings can be fixed for a fraction of rebuild cost.
What we repair
Leaning fences are the most common callout. We dig out failed posts, re-set or replace them in concrete, brace the run straight and re-fix rails and palings. Broken palings, popped rails, sagging gates, stretched wire and rusted fixings are all routine work. Repair or rebuild?
We will tell you straight. If the posts are sound and the damage is local — a few metres flattened by a falling branch, one rotted post — repair is the smart money. If posts are rotting along the whole run, rails are splitting everywhere and the fence has had three decades of weather, patching it is throwing good money after bad. In that case we quote the rebuild alongside the repair so you can compare properly.
Keeping fences standing
Small maintenance stretches a fence's life a long way. Keep gardens and soil off the base of palings, clear vines that hold moisture against timber, oil gates hinges once a year, and walk the boundary after big storms to catch lean early. A post re-braced in autumn is a fence that survives winter.
Getting started
Walk the fence and mark every problem spot with tape or a photo — lean, rot, missing palings, gates that drag. Note which way the ground falls and where water sits, because drainage often causes the failure. Most repairs are completed in a single visit, and we take the broken materials away with us.
