A gate gets used every day, so it has to work every day. Christchurch Gate and Fence builds and fits pedestrian and vehicle gates that swing true, latch first time and match the fence they sit in — whether that is a new boundary we have just built or an existing fence that needs an opening.
Pedestrian gates
Side access, front paths and garden entries usually call for a simple pedestrian gate. The essentials are a square, braced frame, hinges fixed into a solid post, and a latch you can work one-handed with shopping in the other. Self-closing hinges and child-resistant latches are available where the gate guards a pool area — see pool fencing for barrier rules.
Vehicle and driveway gates
Driveway gates carry more weight and take more punishment, so the posts and hardware matter even more. We set gate posts deeper with bigger footings, fit adjustable hinges so the gate can be re-levelled as the ground moves, and recommend drop bolts or sturdy hasps to hold wide gates steady in a nor'wester.
Matching your fence
A new gate should look like it belongs. Timber gates are built from the same palings or slats as the fence line; metal gates are powder-coated to match panels. If the existing fence is an older style, we can usually source or mill timber to blend in. And if the posts themselves are the problem — rotted or leaning — we will say so and price new posts rather than hanging a good gate on a bad post.
Getting started
Work out how the gate will be used day to day — foot traffic only, or wheelie bins, trailers and utes as well. Measure the opening and note which way the gate should swing so it clears paths, slopes and parked cars. Photos of the existing posts and fence help us price hardware correctly. On the day we check posts are plumb and solid, hang and level the gate, set the latch height, and test the swing a dozen times before we call it done. Most single gates are fitted within half a day.
